On July 1, Florida introduced a new law targeting drivers who engage in extremely high speeds. Known as the “super speeder” law, this legislation criminalizes certain excessive speeding offenses rather than treating them as simple civil infractions.
Specifically, the law defines “dangerous excessive speeding” as situations where a driver either exceeds the posted speed limit by 50 miles per hour (mph) or more, or drives at 100 mph or higher in a manner that threatens the safety of other persons or property or interferes with the operation of any vehicle.
Drivers found guilty under this new law face serious penalties:
- First-time offenders could receive up to 30 days in jail, a fine of $500, or both.
- Repeat offenders face even harsher penalties, including up to 90 days in jail, a fine of $1,000, or both. Additionally, if someone is convicted of a second or further violation within five years of a previous conviction, they will have his or her driving privilege revoked for at least 180 days but no more than one year.
