Miami Among Has Some of the Worst Traffic in the U.S.

Aside from its rich culture, gorgeous climate, and pristine beaches, most visitors to Miami will no doubt notice its grueling traffic. As one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities, characterized by an ever-expanding urban sprawl, it may be little surprise that Miami ranked among the top ten in the United States for the severity of traffic.

The news comes courtesy of The Fiscal Times, which cites an annual traffic index released this past week by GPS-maker TomTom. The company utilizes data from its ubiquitous devices, measuring travel times during the whole day, including peak periods, and comparing them with travel times during non-congested hours. Thus the report gives a broad, on-the-ground picture of just how bad traffic is in some of these cities.

Unsurprisingly, Los Angeles – a city synonymous with awful traffic – tops the list, with 30-minute commuters spending an annual average of 90 hours a year sitting in traffic. Overall travel times in the city are around 36 percent longer than they would be without delays, and a whopping 75 percent longer during the evening rush hour.

To top it all off, despite repeated efforts to reduce dependence on automobiles, L.A.’s congestion has only gotten worse over the years, rising 2 percentage points from 2012 to 2013.

So how does Miami fare in this list? It comes in at seventh place, with the highway congestion level at 12 percent and non-highway congestion at 32 percent. This compares with 50 percent for Honolulu, 35-40 percent for New York City, and 31 percent for Portland. Notably, Miami was among the few east coast communities bedeviled with bad traffic: most of the worst cities were out west.

If it is any consolation, these cities could be worse: TomTom’s index recorded Rio De Janeiro, Brazil as having the worst traffic in the entire Western Hemisphere, with Mexico City and Sao Paulo also beating out U.S. “winner” L.A.
