Each year, South Florida law enforcement agencies come together in an initiative called Operation Clear Track aimed at reminding drivers about the laws and safety measures drivers should take when they are at a railway crossing. The effort is part of the larger initiative known as National Rail Safety Week, which is now in its second year.
During Operation Clear Track, officers monitor various locations to ensure drivers are not attempting to continue moving forward when the railway crossing signs are coming down, among other violations. Officers have issued citations in various cities throughout South Florida including Deerfield Beach, Wilton Manors, Pompano Beach, and Oakland Park.
Operation Clear Track comes on the heels of a recent news story where a woman in Hallandale Beach attempting to make a turn ended up accidentally driving onto the railroad tracks after mistaking the tracks for the road. The woman managed to get out of her vehicle before the high speed Brightline train plowed into the vehicle.
