As if record-breaking traffic and constant construction were not obstacles enough, traveling on the turnpike has now become a little more expensive: according to the Sun Sentinel, the rates for SunPass and Toll By Plate have risen 1.6 percent since the start of July.
Note that this applies only on the Florida Turnpike and other state-run roads, such as Alligator Alley, the Sawgrass Expressway, and the Beachline Expressway between Orlando and the Space Coast; thus the express lanes on federal roads like Interstates 95 and 595 will be unaffected.
To put it all into perspective, a full trip along the entirety of the turnpike – which runs from Florida City in Miami-Dade County to Wildwoods in Sumter County (Central Florida) will rise from $20.07 to $20.41 for SunPass users and from $24.85 to $24.93 for Toll by Plate. Tolls on Alligator Alley will increase by a nickel, from $2.85 to $2.90.
The response from Florida residents has thus far been muted, perhaps because the hikes are not all that high, relatively speaking – or maybe it is because chronically bad traffic and constant detours and closures occupy far more attention.
