Florida Launches Safe Summer Travel Campaign

safesummerWith the arrival of summer, the Florida roadways are about to become busier, upping the risks of being on the road. To reinforce the importance of practicing safe driving, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) recently launched its Safe Summer Travel Campaign.

Some alarming facts obtained from the DHSMV website reinforce the importance of practicing safe driving. For starters, did you know that speeding results in about 300 fatalities a year in Florida alone? A little bit of research shows that driving well over the speed limit will not necessarily get a driver to their destination significantly faster. Last year, over 100,000 citations were issued in Florida due to speeding and there were just over 60,000 crashes. Obeying speed limits means safer roads for everyone.

Another thing the campaign mentions: tire safety. When is the last time you inspected them? With the millions of miles driven, it’s imperative that drivers regularly take a look at their tires to make sure they are being properly maintained.

Driving sober, preventing heat stroke, safety belts, all of these are part of the Safe Summer Travel Campaign. While most of it may be common knowledge, it never hurts to be reminded. Stay safe on the roads this summer.
