Be Aware of Spring Break Dangers

As we’re in the midst of Spring Break, many college students are flocking to the beaches with friends and a cooler of beer. During this time, it is important to take precautions as spring breakers are at risk from a number of alcohol-related dangers.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has shown that each year an estimated 1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes, and an estimated 599,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol. Those numbers rise during spring break — a time when many students are swept up in the pressures of keeping up with their peers.

Alcohol poisoning happens when a person has consumed a toxic amount of alcohol, usually over a short period, and the blood alcohol level is so high it is considered toxic. Many times alcohol poisoning happens when someone is binge drinking, and they drink more alcohol than they realize they are drinking. Rapid binge drinking is especially dangerous because the person can drink a fatal dose before losing consciousness, and a person who drinks a fatal dose of alcohol will eventually stop breathing.

Binge drinking isn’t just about the number of drinks consumed, but also the time frame in which it is consumed. When a man consumes five or more drinks in a row within a two-hour period and when a woman consumes four or more drinks in a row within a two-hour period they are binge drinking. One drink is considered 12-ounce beer, 10-ounce wine cooler, 4 ounces of wine and 1 ounce 80-proof liquor.
