Ban on Texting May Not Only Apply to Cars

put it down

Drivers are not the only ones who are being told to “Put It Down” according to the seasonal campaign by the Florida Department of Transportation. This also applies to bicyclists and people on skateboards, hoverboards, mopeds, and other similar vehicles.

County commissioners voted unanimously to approve a resolution to teach drivers between the ages of 16 and 24–the most at-risk demographic for distracted driving–the dangers of it. The program is currently unnamed and will focus on the installation of signs to deter mobile device use in public spaces and roadways. While Florida officially banned texting while driving back in 2013, an officer cannot pull someone over for doing so without having done another violation first. Neither this nor an increase in seatbelt usage did much to mitigate a 31% increase in accidents and fatalities in the three years afterwards. Hopefully something can be done to reduce this. As another campaign run by AT&T offers another viewpoint that bears repeating, “It Can Wait”.
