Miami’s traffic woes are once again intensifying thanks to the Venetian Causeway, which has been closed once again, just a week after this year’s Art Basel events. Generally considered the safest means for cyclists to get across Biscayne Bay, the causeway still requires significant repairs despite having closed before from June 2015 to February of this year. However, this was not enough time to complete all of the necessary repairs and the bridge once again shut down last month.
Last year, the Venetian Causeway did remain closed during Art Basel, resulting in significant traffic headaches in Miami Beach as well as neighboring Miami. This year, Miami-Dade County chose to keep it open and it remained open until yesterday. While traffic will likely worsen, cyclists have the greatest risk. The causeway’s slow speeds are a safer means of getting around than the much faster MacArthur Causeway.
Thankfully, the Venetian Causeway is scheduled to reopen at the end of the month in time for the various New Year’s festivities, a significantly less amount of time than the last time it closed.
