Third Party Website Charges Drivers Extra to Renew

websiteWhen Florida drivers need to renew their driver’s license, they can either search for the correct website or simply type in www.gorenew.com. In the case of the former, users may have been lead to a website called ETags.com, a vehicle registration and title services company. The website recently came under scrutiny when it was revealed it was allegedly charging its users excessive fees when they tried to renew their tag.

Typically, if a Florida driver were to renew their registration for two years, the price would be about $70. In the case of ETags, the website charged a customer $106 in one example, tacking on extra service fees that are not charged by Florida for the same type of transaction.

Moving forward, ETags must clearly inform its future customers that it is unaffiliated with the government and it must also itemize the fees it is charging. It will also be required to refund certain customers who mistakenly thought they were, in fact, using a government website.

Floridians looking to renew their vehicle tags or their license should remember that they have the option of visiting www.gorenew.com or they can also use the MyFlorida app on their smartphone.
