Officers Ramp Up Their Memorial Day Efforts

fieldSobrietyMemorial Day weekend is right around the corner, which means there will be many more drivers on the Florida roadways heading out on mini vacations due to the extended weekend.

More drivers means there will be also be a greater amount of drunk drivers on the roads and law enforcement officers across the state are fine tuning their DUI detection skills thanks to the Florida Public Safety Institute which recently funded a course designed to educate officers and help them with detecting and catching drunk drivers by improving their field sobriety test skills. The tests were conducted in a controlled environment using inebriated participants with varying blood alcohol content (BAC) levels that either met or just slightly exceeded legal driving limit levels.

Interestingly, it’s the drivers with a BAC level around .06 or .08 that are typically the ones choosing to take the dangerous risk of driving while intoxicated, they are almost always among the toughest ones to spot. However with the course training, nearly all of the officers were able to spot these people and take the proper steps.

Over in Palm Beach County alone, more than 2,500 arrests are made every year due to drunk driving. If you’re planning on heading out this Memorial Day weekend be careful on the roads, stay vigilant, and remember to have a designated driver if you’re planning on drinking.
