Florida’s Worst Counties for Distracted Driving

textDriveLast year alone, Florida had well over 45,000 crashes involving distracted driving, resulting in more than 200 fatalities. Distracted driving remains a major problem in Florida because of factors such as the limited measures available to law enforcement to tackle the issue. Certain counties in the state have it worse than others when it comes to distracted driving crashes.

The worst county in all of Florida is Wakulla County. Last year, over 100 crashes were caused by distracted driving. That number is over 40% greater than the state’s average of 83. For whatever it’s worth, Miami-Dade County did not make the list of top ten counties for distracted driving. However, it did manage to crack the top twenty, with 93 crashes per 1,000 registered vehicles.

Florida’s is among the few states that don’t have strict laws when it comes to performing actions such as talking on a cell phone and driving. It remains a secondary offense which means a law enforcement officer would have to pull a driver over for a primary offense like speeding before the driver could be cited for also having been caught texting. Drivers should also know that using headphones can, however, be enforced as a primary offense.
