Marijuana use remains a hot-button topic in the United States, with strong opinions among people who are against it and those that support it, for medicinal purposes or otherwise. Some states like Colorado have chosen to legalize it while others like Ohio have recently voted strongly against it. Other states like Florida will be facing the potential legalization of marijuana once again in 2016, but how does this affect drivers?
Federally funded reports have shown some concerning statistics in regards to marijuana use. For starters, the majority of DUI arrests cite marijuana as the reason. Visits to the emergency room increased by over 50 percent between 2011 to 2013 and it was due to marijuana. Hospitalizations have also increased dramatically by over 80 percent since 2008, again marijuana related. Worse yet, traffic fatalities involving marijuana have doubled between 2007 and 2012 in Colorado.
The American Medical Association, the American Lung Association, and other reputable medical associations and professionals are against the legalization of marijuana. It certainly does have its valid uses, backed up science but because of its other effects or potential misuse, its legalization will likely remain a highly controversial issue. Regardless of where you stand, always be careful when driving on the Florida roads, and make sure you always drive sober.
